The Power of Revision — Why Great Writing Is Rewritten
| Wesley McIntyre
First drafts are not meant to be perfect. They’re meant to exist.
Revision is where writing becomes storytelling. It’s where vague ideas sharpen, weak verbs gain strength, and emotional beats land with precision. The best writers aren’t faster or smarter—they’re willing to rewrite.
Start revisions in layers. First, look at structure: does the piece flow? Then clarity: is the meaning unmistakable? Finally, polish language—tighten sentences, cut excess, replace abstractions with specifics.
One of the hardest lessons for writers is learning to delete sentences they love. But clarity always beats cleverness. If a line distracts rather than serves, it has to go.
Revision isn’t punishment. It’s collaboration—with your earlier self.
