Showing vs. Telling — Making Readers Feel the Story
| Wesley McIntyre
“Telling” gives information. “Showing” creates experience.
Instead of telling readers a character is afraid, show their shaking hands, shallow breath, or hesitation at the door. Sensory details—sound, texture, smell—pull readers into the moment.
Dialogue is another powerful tool. What characters avoid saying often reveals more than what they do.
Showing doesn’t mean eliminating all telling. It means choosing the right tool for the right moment.
